A rout, plain and simple, it was a rout for Alexander Central Thursday night in Olin.
All week the so called experts predicted it, the coaches schooled the players on being over confident, and the fans considered it a given, it was going to be a rout.
Alexander Central romped over North Iredell 46-0 to 0 to extend the Raider losing streak to 17 games dating back to 2015. The Cougars held a team scoreless for the first time since a 41-0 win over St Stephens in 2012.
For the third straight game the Cougars scored in their first possession when quarterback Gunnar Anderson found Kendall Flowers streaking down the sideline for a 33 yard touchdown pass, the conversion attempt failed and the Cougars led 6-0 less than two minutes into the game. By the time halftime rolled around the Blue and Gold were in control 20-0.
Senior fullback Devon Weiss saw his first action of the season and thrashed the Raiders for 132 yards on just 9 carries including a touchdown. Weiss would leave the game early in the 2nd quarter with a hamstring tweak, not to return. Tevin Clark rushed for 155 yards on 15 carries and a score. Jamison Benfield pick up an incredible 81 yards on just two carries and a score on a night when Senior tailback Bryson Godfrey did not play while nursing an ankle sprain. The Cougars gashed North for 456 yards on the ground and out gained the home team 515-98.
The defense which is showing much improvement in 2017 and it’s in no small part because of big plays. The Cougars forced three fumbles and picked off two passes including a pick-six by Senior Curtis Evans from 41 yards. Jordan Brown collected 10 tackles. About the only negative on the night was the Cougars being flagged for 10 penalties although a couple of the flags were mysterious at best.
Alexander Central will return home next Friday to host North Lincoln. The Knights fell to Fred T Foard Thursday night 40-26 and are 1-1 on the season.
