The conference opener for Alexander Central figured to be a shoot out at South Iredell and the early season roll for the Cougars was shot down.
South Iredell rallied from down 21-7 in the 2nd quarter and won 55-27. Viking quarterback Brady Pope threw 6 touchdowns passes against a bewildered Cougar secondary. Pope was 21 of 26 for 370 yards as he spread his throws to 6 different receivers. Despite that, for a while it looked like the Cougars might take a win home from Troutman. Things changed in the 2nd quarter as the Cougars continued to collect an assortment of penalties. On the night Alexander Central was flagged 20 times for 163 yards.
Gunnar Anderson scored from 3 yards with 7:03 left in the first half putting Coach Butch Carter’s Cougars up 21-7 and the throng who packed Viking Valley were roaring. Things changed ! South Iredell began to take advantage of the Cougar penalties and scored twice before half including a late touchdown set up by a blocked punt. Alexander Central went to the break clinging to a 21-19 lead but they had lost their two fastest play makers. Byrson Godfrey left the game with a thigh injury and Jacob Parson was out for the rest of the night with what is being called a possible concussion.
The 2nd half was all Vikings as Pope passed at will and the Cougar offense stalled without their outside threats. South Iredell outscored the Cougars 48-6 from that point where the Cougar took a 21-7 lead.
ACHS managed 401 yards of offense on the night with Devon Weiss leading the ground game with 89 yards on 19 carries. Issac Chapman led the defense with 6 tackles including a sack.
After the game Godfrey and Parson were declared “day to day” according to Cougar team physician Dr. Joel Inman. Parson said after the game he would be “OK”
Alexander Central will return home next Friday night to host North Iredell.
