A night for scoring, a night for records, and a night for concern ?
Alexander Central, for the 2nd consecutive Friday night set a school scoring record with an 82 to 42 win over Ashe County in West Jefferson.
Last week the Blue and Gold rolled up 75 points in a 75-32 dismantling of Bandys. The points came so fast last night that it had Cougar offensive coordinator Matt Wilson sound almost apologetic for the offensive outburst. Wilson said after the game “We had to keep scoring, they (Ashe County) wouldn’t go away”.
Junior tailback Bryson Godfrey led the assault rushing for a school record 364 yards on only 16 carries and 3 touchdowns. When the night was over the Cougars had rushed for a school record 801 yards and amassed 927 yards of total offense. Junior Devon Weiss picked up 197 yards and scored 4 times, Tejuen Calhoun gained 150 yards on just 10 carries. Staggering numbers indeed for a team that’s now is leading the entire state of North Carolina in scoring averaging an an eye popping 64.25 points per game.
Ashe County had some impressive numbers too. Quarterback Colin Ellis threw for 456 yards and 3 touchdowns. No doubt pass defense will be a point of concern for the Alexander Central as they begin Conference play next Friday against a powerful South Iredell team that features their own outstanding quarterback in Brady Pope.
The rebroadcast of the game is this afternoon at 2.
