“It’s been a good week, we needed it” the words of Alexander Central football coach Butch Carter just before his Cougars ran out on the practice field Thursday.
The Cougars are 4-0 and idle tonight and Carter feels it’s been a good week of review and hopefully improvement. Despite the 4-0 record, at times the Blue and Gold have been less than pleasing to their fans and their coaches. Penalties and mental mistakes have been a constant, particularly the yellow flags. The Cougars have been over 100 yards in penalties in three of the first four games including last week’s too close for comfort 40-36 win over North Lincoln.
Carter said today the team has been in the film room a lot this week, two days instead of the normal one. “We’ve not shown the team any film of West Caldwell yet, we’re focusing on us and what we have to do to play better” Carter offered. “ West Caldwell is a senior laden team and they’re good, we can’t continue to make mistakes and I think we are making some progress.” Asked if the sometimes brilliant and sometimes less than stellar play is causing him and his staff concern, ” No doubt, We gotta get better !” he said.
The veteran coach also said the Cougars are suffering though a rash of injuries, not the least of which is their star tailback Bryson Godfrey. Godfrey has not seen action since the first half of week two against Wilkes Central and hopes are that his ankle sprain will be healed in time for the conference opener next Friday in Gamewell.
