After roaring through four non-league games to start the season, Alexander Central opens what will be their final year in the North Piedmont Conference with a trip to South Iredell tonight.
After 4 games the Cougars are leading the state in scoring posting over 68 points per game for scoreboard operators to tally. AC’s ground attack set a state record last week with 801 yards against Ashe County. Junior Tailback Bryson Godfrey is getting the bulk of attention particularly after 365 yards and a school record a week ago.
The fact that the level of competition increases significantly tonight is not lost on Coach Butch Carter, nor his team. They know the game in Viking Valley will be a tussle
South Iredell enters the game at 3-1, the loss to a powerful Reagan team 21-7 in the season opener. The Vikings have seen their football fortunes improve since Scott Miller took over as head coach in 2010. He has coached South to 66 wins and only 18 losses. Last year in Taylorsville the Vikings prevailed 54-27 enroute to an 11-3 season. South Iredell was tabbed as the pre-season favorites in the NPC.
Junior QB Brady Pope, who is being watched by college programs leads the air oriented attack for South Iredell. He’s already passed for 1260 yards and 13 touchdowns and he spreads the wealth. Four Vikings have over 250 yards receiving with Dydron Leach leading the way with 18 catches for 337 yards and 4 scores. On defense South is led in tackles by linebacker Randy Hall and Safety Nick Hall both with over 35 stops in 4 games.
South has history working in their favor too. Alexander Central has lost to the Vikings 5 straight times since 2001. The last win for the Cougars was in 1996 when ACHS posted a 30-18 win.
