It might look like a mismatch on paper but Alexander Central Coach Butch Carter is not about to take South Caldwell lightly tonight. Carter and his Cougars are coming off a bye week after opening with a win over Watauga , 46-35 two weeks ago. The offense was clicking and the defense despite giving up 35 points shut out the Pioneers in the 4th quarter after trailing going into the period.
On the other side of the coin South Caldwell is reeling after being walloped last week by West Caldwell 44-0 ending a 12 game winning streak against the Warriors. The Spartans managed only 137 yards of total offense in the loss.
Back to Cougar Coach Butch Carter, he knows a bit about South Caldwell having coached there for 15 seasons. Carter took over a program at South that to be fair was a doormat, a cellar dweller, a non factor. He steadily built it and by the time he resigned last December he had compiled a 104-79 record including 57-9 since 2010. Carter’s teams were known for bone jarring defense, strong physical offensive lines, and a bruising ground attack. What they lacked in style they more than made up for it with thump.
ACHS will be healthy tonight including senior linebacker, tailback Tejuen Calhoun who returns after missing the opener with a shoulder injury. Alexander Central leads the all time series 17-9 but South has won the last 5 meetings with the bulk of those 5 games close and shall we say, testy at times ?
It’s for sure Carter will feel some strange emotions tonight when he leads Alexander Central onto the field, after all he’s wearing Blue and Gold in a place where it’s mark of an enemy.
