You never know for sure but chances are tonight’s Alexander Central at Ashe County game will be an offensive show. It’s a battle pitting ACHS (Alexander Central High School) against ACHS (Ashe County High School)
Coach Butch Carter and the Cougars head to West Jefferson this evening to battle the Ashe County Huskies and the two teams are about as different as you can be on offense although they both can light up the scoreboard. For the Cougars it’s a ground game that of late has been nothing short of dynamic. Coming off a 75-32 record setting victory against Bandys last Friday that saw the Cougar ground attack amass 525 yards on just 25 attempts, it’s what’s up front that counts. A lot of attention has been given to Cougar junior tailback Bryson Godfrey and rightfully so, he can blaze the stop watch with incredible speed. Coach Butch Carter this week said that his offensive line “is playing lights out” and therefore the scoreboards have been lighting up as a result. The O Line is big and “salty” a term Carter likes to use and they’ve been allowing Godfrey, Jacob Parsons, QB Gunnar Anderson, and others run free for the most part.
For Ashe County it’s the “Air Raid” attack led by senior quarterback Colin Ellis. He led the Huskies over an injured and seemingly unmotivated Cougar team last year in Taylorsville 45-22. Coach Carter said this week Ashe County “figures I’ve got 4 downs to get 10 yards and I’m throwing it four times knowing if I complete one of them, it’s a first down” . Over the past two games Ashe County has ran fewer than 10 plays on the ground. Ellis will lean on his number 1 target returning All Conference receiver Judd Price. Carter said this week “Ashe County is a good test because we will see some great passing games in conference play”
The difference in tonight’s game is likely to be Alexander Central’s defense and how well they defend the “Air Raid”. The Huskies on defense have struggled giving up 78 and 64 points the last two weeks to Watauga and Hibriten.
Here’s something to take stock in: ACHS will win tonight ! We’ll know which one by around 10 pm.
