The High School Football season begins today in North Carolina. Across the state teams can conduct official practices in preparation for the upcoming season.
In Taylorsville, the Alexander Central Cougars will hold their practice at 6pm. New coach Butch Carter moves from longtime rival South Caldwell to take over the Cougar Football Program. Last Thursday and Friday the team held a mini-camp after voluntary workouts and conditioning drills throughout the summer.
ACHS is coming off a disappointing injury riddled 2015 season that saw the Blue and Gold finish 3-8 missing the post season for the 2nd straight year. Carter has made changes to the defense which allowed 40 points per game last season. Senior linebacker Tejuen Calhoun will anchor Carter’s new defensive scheme. The offense could be potent even with the loss of All North Piedmont Conference quarterback Landon Hammer and tailback Devante Clark. The offense will be led by junior Bryson Godfrey who gained over 1,000 yards as a sophomore last year and junior quarterback Gunnar Anderson who saw significant varsity action in 2015 .
Alexander Central will host Bunker Hill in a scrimmage August 10th at 6pm and will welcome Hickory, Maiden, and Wilkes Central to Cougar Stadium on Friday August 12 in a multi team scrimmage.
The 2016 season will kick off Friday August 19th at home against long time rival Watauga.
B86 Radio again will have every play live on the Radio and online.
