On Tuesday evening, March 21st, the annual Commissioners’ Choice Awards Banquet was held. This banquet highlighted a program which recognizes and awards both outstanding individual and organizational volunteer efforts in our county. This program was carried out and the banquet organized through efforts of our Alexander County Cooperative Extension Service.
The evening started off with a wonderful meal. A scrolling power point presentation was shown during the meal highlighting various volunteer organizations at work in our county. Then, those in attendance enjoyed a superb performance by a select ACHS Saxophone Quartet .
The actual awards program then began with a welcome from Ryan Mayberry the Chairman of our County Commissioners. The commissioners then followed emceeing the recognition and awards to individuals and organizations
The first set of outstanding volunteer individuals to be recognized and awarded was the “Community Spark” Awards. This award was presented to individuals who made a significant contribution or in other words were a spark to their organization. The winners were: Ada Iversen – Alexander 4-H Livestock Club, Connie Killian – Bethlehem Community Development Association, Ronnie Chestnut – Gwaltney Ruritan Club, Joe Carson – Ellendale Volunteer Fire Department and Chad Cockrell – Stony Point Volunteer Fire Department. The banquet then climaxed with recognition and monetary awards for the most outstanding volunteer organizations during 2015 in Alexander County. This is quite an honor since there are well over 100 volunteer organizations in our county. The youth winners were: Alexander Central FFA Chapter – 1st Place ($200), Alexander 4-H Livestock Club – 2nd Place ($125), and Ellendale Student Council – 3rd Place ($75). The adult winners were Bethlehem Ruritan Club – 1st Place ($200), Bethlehem Community Development Association – 2nd Place ($125), and Gwaltney Ruritan Club – 3rd Place ($75).
