According to Sheriff Bowman, the men were acquainted with each other but the circumstances surrounding the death are not clear. There might have been some issues between the suspect and the victim for years Bowman said this afternoon. Shumake has an extensive criminal history. He served time in prison for kidnapping and second degree rape following a conviction in Alexander County in 2004. Shumake was released in 2015.
