Forest Ranger Dennis Whalers says a fire charred about .3 of an acre near the top of the mountain at Rocky Face Park. Whalers says the cause of the fire is not determined.
Vashti Firemen and The North Carolina Forest Service responded around 6pm to a report of fire near the top of the mountain. The rugged terrain meant the firefighters had to scale the mountain to get to the flames. They were quickly able to get the fire under control but Whalers says “It took some dedicated people doing a great job or it could have been much worse.”
With no way to get a tanker up the mountain it was up to those volunteers to scale a mountain with chainsaws and backpack blowers and Whalers says “They did it and didn’t blink an eye.”
