The Alexander County Board of Commissioners tonight voted to add a county wide ABC Referendum to the November ballot. Commission Chairman Ryan Mayberry offered the proposal to the board. Commissioner Milton Campbell made the motion for the vote and Commissioner Josh Lail offered a 2nd to the motion. Those three board members voted for and Commissioners Ronnie Reese and Larry Yoder voted no.
The ABC Referendum would include 4 issues:
* To Permit “on premises” and “off premises” sale of malt beverage
* To Permit “on premises” and “off premises” sale of unfortified wine
* To Permit the operation of ABC stores
* To Permit the sale of mixed beverages in hotels, restaurants, private clubs, community theaters, and convention centers
The last referendum on Alcohol sales was in 2013 and voters rejected it by less than 5%. Alexander County is one of only 2 “dry” counties in the state of North Carolina although the town of Taylorsville does permit off the premises sale of beer and wine and has an ABC store.
