Taylorsville Police have arrested two men following a rather bizarre chase. Last Saturday around 9:30 pm Officer W.B Hamby observed a vehicle traveling in town being driven by a man he knew was unlicensed. Hamby activated his blue lights and siren but the driver attempted to speed away. The chase lasted for a short while on several streets ending on 1st Avenue Drive SW. Prior to stopping the officer observed numerous items being thrown out the vehicle windows by both the driver and a passenger. Among the items discarded , a box of 9mm shells, a black handgun., and an open container of beer. A small amount of marijuana was found in the car as well. It was also discovered that while attempting to throw the handgun out the window the weapon discharged striking the dashboard. Arrested was the driver, 21 year old Justin Nathaniel Helton and 20 year old Austin Markise Saddler. Both men face counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Helton is also charged with Fleeing to elude arrest, careless and reckless driving, no operator’s license, driving left of center, Possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The Alexander County Sheriffs Office assisted in the arrest. Both men were placed in the County Detention Center. Helton was given a $28,0000 secured bond, Saddler’s bond was placed at $20,000. Both men made initial court appearances Monday, December 14th.
***NOTE*** Earlier in the year Helton and Saddler agreed to a cash settlement from the County. In exchange for the settlement the duo agreed to drop a lawsuit against the county. Helton and Saddler accused the Alexander County Jail staff with abuse dating back to 2011.
