The body of the man who drowned early this morning on Lake Hickory has been recovered. According to Alexander County Deputy Fire Marshall Mark Earle the body was retrieved shortly after 3pm today.
The story began around 1:50 am at the bridge that crosses Lake Hickory on Highway 127 in Bethlehem. A contract worker with a firm hired by the North Carolina Department of Transportation was working as part of a crew painting the steal support structure of the bridge.
Several co-workers attempted to rescue him but to no avail. The rescue operation began well before sunrise and involved multiple agencies. With assistance of sonar and a diver from Charlotte the body was found near where he had fallen into the water.
Authorities from Catawba County are investigating the accident as is OSHA. The name of the victim has not been released by investigators but reports indicate the victim was from Guatemala.
