The Ashe County Sheriff’s Office arrested one of its own last week following an internal investigation, according to Ashe County Sheriff Terry Buchanan.
In a press release Buchanan confirmed the arrest of Katie Alicia Richards, 26, of Lansing, a detention staff officer at the Ashe County Jail, on 12 counts of felony “sexual activity by a custodian.”
Buchanan said the arrest stems from complaints made to his office which kick started an internal investigation by the agency’s own Criminal Investigation Division.
According to Buchanan, Richards was issued a $250,000 secured bond and was scheduled to first appear before a judge on June 2.
The investigation is currently ongoing, according to the release, and “additional charges and arrest are pending.”
