Communities In Schools (CIS) staff in partnership with the Alexander County Missional Network are excited to currently be working with and growing the Reading Partners Program in Alexander County Schools. Last school year they were active at Taylorsville Elementary, Hiddenite Elementary and Stony Point Elementary Schools. They are expanding the program to Wittenberg Elementary this year. The reading partners program is currently in need of new volunteers at Wittenberg, as well as
reliable volunteers at Taylorsville, Hiddenite and Stony Point Elementary. Reading Partners is a program where volunteers from the community work with 2nd and 3rd grade students to help them learn invaluable reading skills. Volunteers commit to 30 minutes a week tutoring a student. In just 30 minutes and you can give a child the chance to significantly increase their reading levels and create an irreplaceable bonding experience for both the students and volunteers. Last year all of the students in reading partners increased their reading levels. The Reading Partners Program supplies an easy guide to assist students. To ensure the safety of the students, CIS completes a background check on all prospective volunteers. Volunteers will attend a training before beginning their volunteer work to ensure the success of the program.
If you or anyone you know is interested in volunteering for the program please contact April Oxentine at (828) 244-5645 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org. Communities in Schools is a proud partner of the Alexander County United Way.
