The State Department of Corrections announced Monday they have awarded $2.5 million to the estate of Michael Anthony Kerr. Kerr was an inmate at the Alexander Correctional Institute in Taylorsville. Kerr died enroute to Central Prison in Raleigh for medical treatment. According to file reports Kerr had been in solitary confinement for 35 days. Autopsy results indicated Kerr died of dehydration on September 12th 2014. The death prompted an extensive investigation which resulted on a number of resignations and terminations at the local prison. The Associated press reports that of the $2.5 million, insurance will pay $1.5 million. Following the death procedures were changed at all state prisons and 1,800 staff members across the state received training in crisis intervention.
